Company and governance data

GET`https://api.sec-api.io/float`

Look up the number of outstanding shares per share class and the public float of any company listed on US stock markets, by ticker or by CIK. The response holds the most recent figures and the full history back to 2011, taken from the cover pages of quarterly and annual reports.

## Authentication

Send the API key either as a header or as a query parameter. The header is preferred; the query parameter exists for cases where a header cannot be set, such as opening a URL directly in a browser.

Authorization: required header

The API key on its own. Do not prefix it with Bearer or any other word.

Example `Authorization: YOUR_API_KEY`

token: optional query parameter

The API key, appended to the URL. Use this only when a header is not possible.

## Query parameters

Appended to the URL as a query string.

ticker: optional string

Ticker of the company to look up. Send either ticker or cik, not both. One of the two is required.

Example `AAPL`

cik: optional string

Central Index Key (CIK) of the company to look up, with leading zeros removed, so 1067983 rather than 0001067983. Send either ticker or cik, not both. One of the two is required.

## Response

A JSON object. Nested attributes are collapsed; expand one to see its fields.

total: object

How many records matched the ticker or the CIK.

value: integer

Number of matching records. It is 0 when the ticker or the CIK is unknown, and the data array is then empty.

relation: string

Either eq, meaning value is exact, or gte, meaning value is a floor.

data: array of object

One record per source filing, newest first. Every record the API holds for the company is returned in one response, back to 2011. There is no pagination.

id: string

Unique id of the record, for example f7611b5b0ddb134ae6d4701043eb0e9d.

tickers: array of string

Tickers the record applies to. One ticker when the company has a single share class, and several when it has more, for example ["GOOGL", "GOOG"].

cik: string

CIK of the filer, with leading zeros removed, for example 320193.

float: object

Share counts and float reported for the period.

outstandingShares: array of object

Outstanding share counts, one item per share class reported on the cover page of the filing. Reported on both 10-K and 10-Q filings.

period: string

Date the figure applies to, YYYY-MM-DD. On outstanding shares this is the cover page count date, which is usually a few weeks after the end of the reporting period. On public float it is the last business day of the second fiscal quarter, as Form 10-K requires.

shareClass: string

Share class the figure applies to, for example CommonClassA, CommonClassB or CapitalClassC. An empty string when the filing reports no class label, which is the case for single-class issuers and for some multi-class filings.

value: integer

Number of outstanding shares of the class on outstanding shares, and the public float in US dollars on public float.

publicFloat: array of object

Public float in US dollars, one item per share class reported. Only annual reports disclose public float, so the array is empty on records that come from a quarterly report.

period: string

Date the figure applies to, YYYY-MM-DD. On outstanding shares this is the cover page count date, which is usually a few weeks after the end of the reporting period. On public float it is the last business day of the second fiscal quarter, as Form 10-K requires.

shareClass: string

Share class the figure applies to, for example CommonClassA, CommonClassB or CapitalClassC. An empty string when the filing reports no class label, which is the case for single-class issuers and for some multi-class filings.

value: integer

Number of outstanding shares of the class on outstanding shares, and the public float in US dollars on public float.

reportedAt: string

Timestamp the source filing was published, ISO 8601 in Eastern Time, for example 2026-01-30T06:01:32-05:00.

periodOfReport: optional string

Fiscal period the source filing covers, YYYY-MM-DD, for example 2025-12-27. Absent on a few of the oldest records.

sourceFilingAccessionNo: string

Accession number of the filing the figures were taken from, for example 0000320193-26-000006.

## Status codes

| `200` | Success. The response holds total and data. An unknown ticker or CIK also returns 200, with total.value set to 0 and an empty data array. |
| `400` | Neither ticker nor cik was supplied, or the value is not valid. |
| `403` | The API key is missing, or it is not valid. |
| `429` | Too many requests. Slow the request rate and retry. |
| `500` | Server error. Retry, and report it if it persists. |
